Throttle Controllers: Improve the Performance Efficiency of Your Cherokee
If you want a vehicle that can bring you anywhere you want over any type of terrain then a Jeep is the right type of vehicle for you. Especially when it comes to the Cherokee model you can expect top performance both on and off the road. A Cherokee might not seem like your standard off-roading vehicle but this 4x4 offers the same performance as some of its more aggressive-looking counterparts.
Like all Jeep models, the Cherokee is a muscular car that handles very well. Something that every Jeep has is high-end climate control which you only see in luxurious vehicles. If you want your all-weather warrior to stay that way though, you should consider getting a throttle controller installed on it.
Benefits of Installing a Throttle Controller
Performance
No matter how big of a vehicle a Cherokee is it can benefit quite a lot from a proper Jeep electronic throttle control unit. The very first change you'll notice from a throttle controller is the performance improvement. An electronic throttle control Jeep Cherokee will be able to make your 4x4 more responsive so you don't floor the pedal every time you want to accelerate quickly.
Efficiency
Although a vehicle such as the Jeep Cherokee is nowhere near being as efficient as a hatchback with an electronic throttle control Jeep you can expect this to change. While your Cherokee won't be as efficient as a diesel-powered Yaris it will still be more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption. With less fuel spent, you can expect to cut on some expenses.
Throttle Lag
Something that can happen even to the most advanced vehicles nowadays is throttle lag. This is when your vehicle doesn't respond straight away when you apply the accelerator pedal. This can happen with your Cherokee but it's best that you prevent throttle lag altogether by installing a proper electronic throttle control Jeep Cherokee. Some of you may experience throttle lag without even realising especially if it's subtle but you will definitely feel the change after installing a throttle controller.
Types of Throttle Controllers
Basic
A basic or a standard electronic throttle controller for your Jeep Cherokee will be able to improve both performance and efficiency. But you won't get many options when it comes to the device itself. This means that you are usually going to be able to set a certain mode available on the controller. You might be able to create your own custom mode but that will be in a limited manner, meaning you will be able to make only about a couple of modes.
Advanced
If you want to get more data about your Cherokee's throttle response and be able to make an unlimited number of modes then you should consider going with advanced controller. Also known as programmers, advanced throttle controllers will display information about other systems in your Cherokee alongside allowing you to set your own mode and customise that mode by having access to certain parameters.
How to Install a Throttle Controller in Your Cherokee
1. Now that you've decided the type of throttle controller you want for your Cherokee it's time to install it. The installation of most Jeep electronic throttle control units is mainly the same with some differences related to the actual setup rather than the installation.
2. The first thing you need to do is to locate the original plug also known as the factory plug for the accelerator pedal. You need to remove that plug and place the adapter that came with the throttle controller in that same place.
3. Once that's done take the original plug and reconnect it to the other end of the adapter. When you've connected both the plug and adapter correctly you then need to run the cable of the adapter to the throttle controller. Make sure you do a neat job here so that the cable doesn't hang between your feet all the time and get in your way.
4. It's recommended that you run the cable through the steering column. Once you've done that, mount the throttle controller on the dashboard. Make sure you're using some double-sided tape for this and that the controller doesn't get in the way of other controls on the dashboard.
5. With that done, turn on the controller and set it up according to the provided instruction manual. Some controllers require that you set them up by selecting a certain letter or number depending on the type of transmission of your Cherokee. Others do not require any sort of selection prior to using the controller as the controller goes through the set-up process all by itself.
6. This is usually where you can select the mode you want to drive in. If you are not sure which mode will suit your style of driving then just go for the auto mode. This mode adjusts the throttle response as you drive so it suits the style of driving even if it changes while driving.
